A concierge has a vital role in many different areas of customer service and hospitality and has had this role for centuries. The profession dates back over 800 years and remains a prominent occupation in today’s world of hospitality. The original concierge services were to care for the castle visitors. It was an important that job that soon became popular amongst the wealthy. Everyone wanted a concierge. Many may relate current concierge services to be quite similar to its roots. Some of the basic concierge services today include serving guests and tending to their needs.

Concierge can be found anywhere from posh hotels to private clubs and many places in-between. They can be found in hospitals and even theme parks. Regardless of location, the main function of the concierge in any of these places is to ensure that visitors are comfortable, have what they need, and remain content throughout their stay. Their job is to provide the guest with an exceptional visit.


Concierge services also include assisting visitors with reservations, recommendations, and any other information that is inquired by the visitors. Common inquiries include car rentals, the best restaurants in the area to dine in, show times and prices for various entertainment, and tours of the city or town. The concierge services will often go beyond answering the inquiries to making the reservation and buying the tickets for a show. The concierge does his/her best to provide the guest with what he/she is looking for and do it in a respectable, friendly, and inconspicuous manner.

While concierge services do not end when the sun goes down, their duties may actually increase. Many businesses depend on the concierge to monitor the safety of the guests and building during the afterhours. The concierge may provide security responsibilities in many locations.
